How did Obama Win?
A Cartographic Look at a Democratic Victory

A Traditional Voting Landscape

Although, the Democrats won the Electoral College, and gained support from new states and counties, the “red” and “blue” map of results does not look very different than in the past-- a vast interior sea of red dominates the map.  Indeed, the Republicans did win more counties and their presence still dominates the South and Midwest.  However, these places do not share the majority of the population and therefore were not influential in the electoral vote.
