The Declining Job Market

Obama’s win comes as American struggle through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.  The unemployment rate continued to rise throughout the campaign season, focusing voter desires on new methods for economic recovery.  The choropleth map illustrates the great changes that have occurred since Bush’s election in 2004.  Indeed unemployment has risen to more than 10% in many areas.  Many of the places experiencing severe job loss were places dependent on manufacturing, like Michigan, places having experienced a big boom in housing, like California, and places that previously had high unemployment.  Indeed, a general trend, albeit only by visual comparison, appears to show us that places with high unemployment tended to voted for Obama.
