The Face of Population Change in Boston, 1960 - 2000

Leah Skahen - Spring 2009

These variables were selected because they all pertain to gentrification and yuppy-fication (young-urban-professional).  Knowing that overall population decreased in Boston over the time period, I was interested in learning whether this decrease was driven by young educated Whites, or if the growth trends for these demographics groups in fact contradicted the citywide trend.  Off the bat, I noticed some interesting trends in citywide averages for each of these groups.  Percent age 25-44 and college educated increased steadily over time, even though overall population decreased.  Percent White decreased much more rapidly than overall population.  So I set about breaking down these trends at the tract level to see what was causing a discrepancy in these growth rates.
